What to Do When You Have a Water Leak in Lubbock, TX

Did you know that the most common causes of water damage in homes deal with water leaks, not natural disasters like floods? It’s easy to panic when noticing a leak in your home, but try to stay calm and deal with the situation rationally. In this article, we discuss the steps you should take when experiencing a water leak in your Lubbock, TX home.

Shut the Water Off

A small leak like that from your toilet only requires that you turn off the affected water source. Bigger emergencies mean you’ll need to turn off the main water valve to the home, typically by turning the knob counter-clockwise.

Check the Water Heater

In large plumbing emergencies, it’s important you shut off the water heater so it doesn’t get damaged. Do this after the water gets shut off for the home. Remember to turn off the gas first if it’s a natural gas water heater in order to protect yourself.

Open up the System

Even after turning your water off, there’s still some left inside your pipes that might leak into your home and cause water damage. Get rid of this excess by opening up any spigots you have outside, squeezing out hoses you have connected and using a plunger on any areas experiencing clogs.

Patch up Small Leaks

If you have plumber’s tape in your toolbox, use it to patch up any small leaks while you wait for us to arrive. Otherwise, place buckets or towels underneath areas that drip. This will protect areas of your home like your floors and furniture from becoming water-damaged.

The best thing to do in a plumbing emergency is seeking help from a team of licensed plumbing professionals. If you’re in need of emergency plumbing repair services, give us a call today at Duncan Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. & Plumbing, and we’ll send someone out as soon as possible!
