How Does My Heating System Affect Indoor Air Quality?

A properly maintained heating system will keep your Slaton, Texas, home warm and comfortable during the winter. When improperly maintained, however, a heating system can contribute to poor indoor air quality inside your home. Discover how dirty air filters, equipment malfunctions, and incorrect heating system sizing can affect your home’s indoor air quality.

Dirty Air Filters

The air filters present in your home’s heating system trap dust, debris, pet dander, and other pollutants that can enter your home’s indoor air. When you don’t regularly change or clean the air filters, allergens and other particulates can build up on the filters and eventually work their way into your heating system and ductwork. If you ignore this buildup, you force the system to work harder to deliver heat throughout your home.

Equipment Malfunctions

As a heating system ages, it could experience equipment malfunctions. Loose electrical connections, congested coil fins, and faulty controls are some of the most common problems that can occur with age. These issues can prevent your furnace or heat pump from starting or cause it to cycle on and off without warming your house properly. A malfunctioning heating system can compromise your home’s comfort and indoor air quality.

Incorrect Heating System Sizing

Do certain areas of your home feel colder than others during the winter? Does the air feel stuffy and stale to breathe? Is your wood furniture cracking due to lack of moisture in the air? An improperly sized heating system may be to blame.

A furnace or heat pump that is either too small or too large could short cycle or run nonstop as it attempts to maintain the desired temperature inside your home. When this short cycling or continuous operating occurs, indoor humidity levels can increase or decrease in response to how your heating system is running. These humidity fluctuations can affect members of your household who suffer from asthma and allergies.
